L-Project is proud to announce the opening of the exhibition OSMOSCAPE ( Echoes of the Osmotic Landscape) by Nandita Kumar.
OSMOSCAPE explores a graphical notation score, where data and graphs related to water have been arranged to form a sound score. The found data was then converted into an image using processing code that becomes the visual bases of a score, leading eventually to sound compositions being constructed out of user engagement via a WebApp (app.osmoscape.com), exploring a new way of archiving 55 datasets with their stories and sounds.
This water-data has been collected from the available data from government site, Non- governmental organization, research papers of scientist as well as satellite data, found images as data over the internet. It traces the deep interrelations and complexity of water with its natural environment and simultaneously traces the exponential impact of the anthropocene through the perspective of biology, chemistry, design and technology. A story that is integrated with archived data, sonification and an immersive interactive book, sound and sculptural installation. The narrative of the score starts from the dataset of a water signature to seek life in space, to how water plays a major role in the incubation of life, shaping the DNA to retain the code and attempts to understand the structure of water that leads it to become a universal solvent. This further goes on to explore the impact of population through industrialization, increase in C02 and drawing patterns towards climatic disruptions and stressed water resources. The narrative seeks for similar case studies that show repeated patterns emerging due to industrialization, use of bad technology or bad policy.
Nandita Kumar (born 1981 in Pamplemousse, Mauritius, based in Goa/India) is an Indian- New Zealand new media artist who works at the intersection of art, science, technology and community to create interactive installations. She explores the elemental process through which human beings construct meaning from their experiences, by creating sensory narratives through the usage of data, sound, video/ animation and performance, smartphone apps, customized motherboards, solar/microwave sensors. Her interest lies in propelling the human race towards a sustainable development, which not only focuses on environmental protection, but also social development.
Nandita Kumar is currently fellow of the DAAD Artist-in-Residence, Berlin.
